Different Types of Dental Implants

If you are missing one or multiple teeth, dental implants will provide you with a multitude of benefits. Dr. Steven Cload is an experienced implant dentist in Calgary, Alberta who has helped his patients to regain the beautiful, natural smiles they once had or have always dreamed of having.

Dental implants are long-lasting, strong, and are indistinguishable from the rest of your teeth. They are ideal for patients who maintain good oral health who have lost teeth due to injury, disease, or other reasons. At Southcentre Dental Clinic, we will preform each step of the dental implant process in the office.

Endosteal vs. Subperiosteal Implants

Depending on the thickness and strength of your jawbone, you will either receive an endosteal or subperiosteal implant. Endosteal implants are the most common form of implant; however, they do require you to have significant jawbone strength, as the artificial roots are placed directly into the jawbone. Endosteal implants are the more secure implant out of the two as they are anchored directly in the bone.

If your jawbone is a little thinner or weaker, a subperiosteal implant may work better for you. This implant involves placing the root in the gums, right above the actual jawbone, which preserves the remaining integrity of the jawbone, while anchoring the root securely in your gums.

Porcelain Crowns, Dental Bridges and Dentures

Porcelain crowns are designed to look and feel just like natural teeth. If you are missing one tooth, then a crown is the best option for you. Once you have your root implanted in your jaw and healed, Dr. Cload will secure the crown to the root. The crown and implant do not affect any of the neighboring teeth and are strong and secure in your mouth.

If you are missing several teeth, Dr. Cload will place an implant-supported bridge, which will be secured to two implanted roots. The implant-supported bridge can replace two or more teeth. If you are missing your full set of teeth, an implant-supported denture can be secured to three artificial roots in your mouth. These will stay secure and you wont need to worry about them falling out like real dentures.
